Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory: First 3D Simulation of Subcooled Boiling

Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) won a project to create a subcooled boiling simulation capability. As part of a Postdoctoral Fellowship, I mathematically modeled the physics and implemented it into a CFD program. In partnership with industry recognized experts I was able to modify the source code of a commercial CFD program to simulate multiphase flow. The resulting subcooled boiling model was successfully validated against experimental data. This was a world-first simulation with such capabilities that was selected for government use for advance nuclear reactor design.
